Fasthosts DNS Issues
Fasthosts have had ongoing DNS issues over the last three days. This is very frustrating as one of the domains affected by these problems is my Digitalquill.co.uk domain.
Fasthosts did have a message up on their status page about these problems, but this has now been taken down but my domain is still affected.
I have messaged Fasthosts about these problems but have yet to get a response. It is clear that this is costing me dearly, my plugin sales are down by 25% against the average over the last few days. I have made some sales so it is clear that some people are able to get access to the website.
Very frustrating, mainly the lack of response from Fasthosts support on such a critical issue.
I am considering moving my domains elsewhere, however this is a big job and one that I simply do not have to time to sort out at the moment.
Tablet PCs
I have been looking at tablet PCs for a while now, the recent launch in the UK of the Apple Ipad has the market buzzing with news stories and reviews and new products from competitors. The Dell Streak or Mini 5 being one of these competitors, I have been running a simple news aggregator website for some time as that looked a very promising tool.
Yesterday while looking again at the industry I visited an old favorite of mine, Archos. My first MP3/MP4 player was an Archos, I still use it from time to time, a fantastic tool, well build and well featured. I noticed on their site that they are now moving their products towards to tablet style market. The Archos 9 looks really smart.
There are many great products coming on the market everyday, it is very hard to keep up with the new developments.
I am not sure that I can justify this sort of purchase, but I am sure that the price on these will come down over time, however, this is a great opportunity for my affiliate marketing business to get into, I have been buying domain names with good search volume that relate to this niche, all I need now to do is develop some of them while the iron is hot.
Proportional Representation Domain Names
What with the election result as it is here in the UK and all parties seemingly falling over each other to work with the Liberal Democrats to form the next Government it seems that electoral reform will be the name of the game in the next parliament. I am not going to express any of my political opinions here as this is not the forum to do so, but I did take the opportunity to register proportionalrepresentation.org.uk and singletransferablevote.co.uk domain names.
I registered them at around 3pm on Saturday 8th May and by Sunday morning I have had three offers to buy the proportionalrepresentation.org.uk domain. I am currently in discussions with one party (not political party as far as I know) regarding one of those offers so we will see where it takes us.
Started adding domains into Domain Name Portfolio
One of the largest chunks of work I lost in the recent server failure was the Domain name portfolio I had setup on Quill Internet. This software enables me to list all the domain names that I own in one place.
I want to do this for several reasons, firstly, I use many different registrars so my domain names are all kept in several different locations and are therefore hard to keep track of, and secondly I need to start marketing those domain names for sale and start turning some of them over.
If you are interested in looking at the domain names I have for sale then go over to Quill Internet and have a look at the list, if any take your fancy then drop me a line with an offer.
I wont be letting any go for nothing, but if a decent offer comes in for any of the domains I will consider selling.
Indeed, if any offers come in for any of the developed sites I will consider those also, however, I am happy to keep them ticking over as they are all at least covering their costs and most of them are making a decent amount of money.
I have not finished entering the domain names as I have so many the process is rather slow, but at least I have made a start, and this time I have a backup of my work!!!
Time to buy domain names
With the next Google update scheduled for sometime over Christmas, now is a great time to buy pre-used domain names.
If you can find a domain name that has a low page rank, which has a live site with good up-to-date content and good link backs the chances are that during the next page rank review the site may get a higher page rank and thus be worth more after the page rank review than before.
On the converse side if you are selling domains, it is worth keeping hold of domains until after the review to see what impact it will have on your domains page rank.
Remember though that page rank can also go down as well as up so a domain name may be worth less after the review. This is where your gambling spirit will come in!
