Things round here have been rather busy, although that should not stop me keeping up my blogging.

The honest truth is I have become a little disillusioned since the Google Panda update which seems to have had an impact on this site. My page rank was reduced by one and the result has been a halving in the visitor numbers, however that being said, this site still gets a good readership so I should continue with keeping it up.

I have considered why the site has taken a hit from Panda, all content on the site is totally unique, but one thing it does do which has been a concern of mine for a while with regards to ranking is that it covers a diverse range of topics, it looks at my Internet and software work and affiliate marketing which all fit into a little niche, but then it also looks at DIY, tools, gardening, cooking and family life.

I am not going to change that, this is my blog, about my life and if Google does not like that the raspberries to them!

So what have I been up to in the mast month?

Datafeed Import Plugin 3.1

As you will know I recently released a major update to my Datafeed Import Plugin for WordPress, version 3.0 has been a great success, as with all of these things there have been a few niggles that I have been working on. I am about to release version 3.01 of the datafeed plugin for WordPress with some minor bug fixes.

I have also been having problems with SPAM on my Digitalquill Support system, literally hundreds of thousands of SPAM messages, and nearly 20k in one day, this has effectively killed the support system I used and made it impossible for me to find genuine tickets.

I am in the process of doing two things to combat this, I am trying to put a CAPACHA into the new ticket form on the ticket system, however, this is third part software which thus far has not liked what i have done to it so back to the drawing board.

I am also working on creating a user forum for all the software I have developed, I did have a forum in the past, but this was one where I allowed users to register and participate, this soon suffered the same fate as the support system and was overwhelmed by SPAM.

With this new forum I intend to make it user only, using the username and password provided to users when they buy the software, the same username and password they use to download the software. In this way I will disable all user registration and as such it will be a private forum where only users can post, that is unless spammers find a hole in the phpBB software and exploit it.

Category Master Plugin

I have just released a new plugin, which I will post more about here in the next few hours. The Category Master plugin allows you to automate the categorisation of your WordPress blog.

As with my other software, this has been built out of a requirement in my own business, it complements the Datafeed and Amazon import plugins as it allows you to automatically create your own categories rather then using the ones provided in the datafeed.

As I say I will post here about the launch of this new plugin and give you more details about what it is and what it does.

Family life

Family life has been busy, I am still finishing off the Orangery, we have had some delays due to electrics, but now the floor is down, skirting boards are on and about the only thing left to do is paint. We have even been looking at wallpaper and decoration for the dining room which connects to the Orangery so we must be nearly there!

Eva has not been at school over the summer so there has been some entertaining to do there, we went to a great place in North Lincolnshire last week called Elsham Hall, it was fairly quiet as it was the last day they were open before the winter, but Eva loved feeding the fish in the lakes and rolling down the hills. She has a real affinity with animals and stood for ages stroking the sheep and goats.

We will be on holiday soon, just a short 5 day break to North Yorkshire Moors, but it should be good.

Related posts:

<a

At first I thought this was a method of moderating yourself from flaming or ranting at someone, but having dome some more reading it is a way of improving your writing. In simple terms, the theory goes, once you have your final draft for a post wait 24 hours before you re-read it and publish it.

The idea behind this is that you, as a person change from day-to-day, your emotions, state of mind, stress level, perspective and many external influences on you change. As such, if you want to write higher quality posts, work as you do now, construct and write your post, proof read and edit it until you have something that you would publish, but before hitting that publish button, wait for 24 hours, then re-read your work, make any amendments you see fit, and then publish.

I will be trying this technique out on as many of my blog posts as I can. This will mainly be on other blogging projects that I am just starting, as these are more focused niche blogs rather than this general one, but I will also use it here. I hope that by giving each post a 24 hour breathing space I will be able to improve the quality of the output.

It will not always be relevant, especially if a blog post is related to a current event, or product offer, but there are many posts that I have published that I wish I had just waited and re-read with fresh eyes. Of course we all hope access to that edit button, but, it would be better to get it right first time round.

This post was first written at 11:33pm on the 27th June 20011

And published at 12:38pm on the 28th June 2011

Related posts:

<a

When I get some time I intend to research or develop some a single plugin that can do more of this automatically.

This way you are building your back links and increasing the chances of your site being well indexed by Google and other search engines and over time you are building up a body of back links that will remain relevant and live back to your site. Even if they do not improve your page rank directly, this social promotion will also gain you organic traffic from people who find those posts from different angles.

I have one of these check lists for each of my blogs and have a modified one for my affiliate sites so when I create or review another product on those sites I will also go through a similar list.

If anyone has any thoughts on how to extend this list I would be interested to hear your ideas.

Related posts:

Amazon. In my opinion a deal that if you are a blogger or online marketer should not pass up, and I will tell you why.

This book can not magically get you a six-figure income, and the authors are at pains to say thins throughout, but if you follow the hints and tips in the book and you put in the hard work and dedication that the authors talk about, then you will be in with a good chance of creating a decent blog and getting a half decent income from it in the long run.

I know why the authors decided on the title for this book, it does grab your attention, but it does perhaps suggest that this is a ‘get rich quick’ scheme, which it is not, it is so much more than that, and by no mean a con.

The book gives you the reality, and points out that blogging is not easy money, the authors keep referring back to effort leading to rewards which is something that I always believe is true in any walk of life or business stream, put in the effort and you will get the rewards.

The Secrets of blogging book is presented and written in an easy to read format, in an almost conversational style of writing. You will probably not read the book cover to cover, as it is not that type of subject matter, but this book gives you help throughout the whole life cycle of your blog, from starting it to earning from it and eventually selling it if that is your end-game.

The ProBlogger book will always be on your desk and you will keep referring to it as you build your blog, dipping into the chapters that you feel will help you. I have had one or other of the editions of this book on my desk for the last 2 years, and even brought it away on holiday with me, much to the disgust of my wife!

The gem of this book is that the authors challenge the reader to take action, to do something useful and worthwhile, ‘be remarkable in everything you do’ say the authors, which is very profound, but does challenge you critically review how you operate and make the changes necessary to improve what you do.

I found the chapters on Buying and Selling blogs particularly interesting and useful as I am currently trying to sell several blogs and am in the market for buying an established blog.

Before buying both copies of this book, i of course read other reviews that were out there on the Internet, the only bad thing I could find at the time was that there was no Digital format copy of the book, I am pleased to tell you that this is no longer the case with a Kindle format available for sale on pro-blogger which was taking about measuring success of your blog. Throughout this article the guest writer Stephen Guise of Deep Existence maintained that neither traffic or content is a good measure of success.

This kind of set me aback, and set me thinking as I have always judged the success of blogs and sites in general by their content and their traffic stats. However I do see the writers point here, getting hung up on content and traffic stats can sometimes get in the way of the real judge of success and that is that of what your readers or customers actually think of your site.

This is often not an easy thing to quantify. I know for a fact looking at search terms that a large number of people come to this site looking for specific DIY details relating to roofing materials and our orangery project, however, do those visitors find what they read useful? That is a question that is very hard to answer, I hope that they do.

On some of my posts on this site, I have reviewed tools, these reviews have (yes I admit it, shock horror!) affiliate links to recommended suppliers for those tools. Once could suggest that a good judge of what my readers think of the content is if they click on that affiliate link and buy that product, but it really is not as simple as that, they may find the information useful and as such the post as done a good job in that regard, but they may have missed the affiliate link for some reason, or simply decided to buy elsewhere, it maybe that those posts are good, useful reviews but poor at pushing the visitors through to the affiliate sites.

I know that these reviews must be useful as I have reffered many buyers to the affiliate sites, but again the reverse argument to the above is valid, did my review give them the information that they needed or was it just the piece that swung the balence after reading otehr reviews.

I think that I will stick to my ethos that good content is king, if you provide useful, unique information that people will want to read and will benefit from reading, then surely you will not go far wrong.

As for measuring the success of a blog or website, I am unsure. Repeat visitors is clearly a good method, people coming back must see something that they find useful. I will keep thinking about this as I look at the stats for this site falling due to lack of blogging. So no, I think that visitors are a good judge of success and good content leads to visitors so I will stick by my fundamentals that content is king.

Related posts:

<a

Which shows me yet again and proves the point I always make, success is directly proportional to the effort you put in.

The question is what have I been doing differently this year to last, well the main thing that I can put it down to is consistent blogging. Blogging good unique content about projects that people are interested in. Simple as that.

In the next 8 months of 2011 I would like to focus on getting a 10% month on month increase in traffic numbers. In the first three months of the year I was getting rather month than that in terms of an increase so I think it is very much possible.

Related posts:

<a

This appears to be a similar idea to one that I have engaged in with some of my mini sites, but it is suggested that it is actually a great deal of work and a lot o effort for potentially little reward. This has got me thinking of what sorts of methods one can employ to practically build links.

I have come up with 20 fairly obvious methods, I wonder how many you use on your sites.

Write good useful content, people will link to it

Post comments on blogs

Engage in forums leaving a link in your signature

Create yourself a blog on WordPress.com or Blogger.com (or even better both) and write unique content that points back to your site

Add your link to your profile on your social networks

Tweet your links

Digg all articles or posts you write

If your site is high quality and unique in your niche try adding a link to the relevant Wikipedia page or write a wikipedia page for your nice if it does not exist.

Use Pay per link services (although Google may take a dim view on this)

Submit articles to good Article directories with a link back to your site int he article

Become a guest blogger for someone else’s site

Write Press releases and submit them to relevant directories, they will get picked up and used.

Submit to free directories, although this is probably not worth the effort as the value of these links will be low

Submit to paid directories such as Yahoo and The best of the web

Request links from any trade associations, business associations or governmental bodies related to your niche

Engage in questions posted on Yahoo Answers

Review relevant products on Amazon

Sponsor a WordPress Theme

Launch your own affiliate programme. This will in it’s self by default generate links

Create a link bait – Whole new subject which I will look at in due course.

Related posts:

<a

There are link cloaking plugins out there but none of them actually achieve what I would call the perfect plugin so I have make the investment and created one.

The WordPress plugin is targeted at people who use Affiliate links within their blogs but it is also useful from an SEO point of view for anyone who works with deep links. This plugin is flexible as it allows the user to control the cloaking and the follow tag on the links.

I will post more here when I have fully tested the plugin and I am ready to release it. I hope that it will be ready to go by the end of the month, when I will add it to my growing collection of <a

I am still not quite happy with it, I want to change the header slightly, but there was a bigger reason behind this.

I have been considering my brand for some time. My Digitalquill website had been languishing as it was when I was running it as a full time multimedia and web design company. It looked very dated, had not been updated for several years and really did not reflect the work that I do under the Digitalquill brand.

I am also looking to build the Digitalquill brand back up to what it was when I was working on it full time. I hope that I can give my business a second life within the sphere that I now work in.

Much of my work is now web application development, Content management systems, WordPress plugin Development such as the Datafeed import plugin for WordPress and the Amazon Import Import Plugin for WordPress, Paypal and Google checkout integration applications and other business management software.

The applications I currently have for sale (which did not even appear on the old website at all) are doing very well, but have, up to this point been disparate products, each marketed on their own with very little in the way of tieback to the Digitalquill brand and as such little cross marketing.

I have re-developed the Digitalquill website to reflect this new work and concentrate on the areas of my business that are working well for me. I have moved the website onto the WordPress framework so that it is easily updateable. I have got to add more content, but the basis of the site is there and beginning to form. It is already a great deal better than the old site and worth more to my business as a result.

With more applications being developed all the time, I hope that I can rapidly get them listed onto the site and into the market place. I will still develop websites for the larger applications, but the Digitalquill site will provide a portal into those sites and an overview of the work we are currently doing at Digitalquill.

In addition I have created an area dedicated to our Affiliate Marketing work, I have yet to get our affiliate websites into that portfolio, but we will drip feed them onto the site over the coming days and weeks. I will also create pages to detail the work that we do.

The long term plan is to build up the application development to such an extent that it is once again as a business it is able to sustain the salaries of myself, designers and developers.

This blog will also support the brand, Digitalquill is Matt Houldsworth and Matt Houldsworth is Digitalquill. My work on this blog correlates strongly with the work I do with Digitalquill. I will of course continue to post about things that are not related directly to the Digitalquill brand, the family, DIY and the like, but I hope that this will add to rather than detract from these branding efforts.

Related posts:

<a

I am fairly sure that the attackers gained access to the server via WordPress.

I use WordPress as the backbone to 90% of my sites, this being so it is critically important that it is secure. I have therefore been researching methods to make those installs more secure. Here is what I have found:

The Obvious:

1. Keep up-to-date

Always use the latest version of Wordpres, there is no excuse not to, WordPress now has an inbuilt update feature which is very simple to use. Make sure that you use the latest version of WordPress, All plugins and all themes, even if those plugins or themes are not active.

2. Admin User

Although WordPress 3.x allows you to choose your WordPress admin username, many people still use ‘admin’ especially if you have upgraded from older version of WordPress and have a pre-existing user.

The problem with this is that it is known by hackers who can try and use brute force attacks on your password. If they do not know your username they have to do a brute force attack on both your username and password and get them to match and as such the likelihood of getting the correct combination is reduced

Change your admin user to something else using the SQL command:

UPDATE wp_users SET user_login = ‘YourChosenUser’ WHERE user_login = ‘Admin’;

3. Use a secure password

I use http://strongpasswordgenerator.com/to create strong passwords. Make sure you do not use dictionary words as many brute force attacks use dictionaries to work through tries on your password.

Tips are to use numbers and letters, mixes case and some characters.

4. Add Keys to the wp-config.php file

WordPress 3.x does this for you, but it is worth checking that you have the keys completed in your wp-config.php file. It should look something like:

define('AUTH_KEY',        '19[9lL.u~lwAMWEv-HwZ+@Fm{1FP+<jDgcq|GMF|G@Oklq_w;ftPlsXO@|S^4');

define('SECURE_AUTH_KEY', 'JiSUZrIM5T!7$z;rcS];qL>L L)c@,Tqe~B=#M=V,Wgb:>F|h$d0g55)!_9Ol-');

define('LOGGED_IN_KEY',   'm~ v--9/-l+9=[$VD($<o-Afz(8uxH[p4yaVnTR3Zf5mbV6PUdu3W?J|Wr8/:`e');

define('NONCE_KEY',       '%i.WRYyslvZ.C*Np5L5S27t4 ihJF,HMhy~$aEKV0#=/`I~$o-Mu<revq/fIhb+e');

define('AUTH_SALT',        '[J&pERV+!rfO6|n0OzNo5g7 P .cOia|{^4A$Ol4w`([o-JC3:|D3nTXDx4S9H');

define('SECURE_AUTH_SALT', '%P)h3cUD=EX/2z+EY@/~i;%TjlB(EL]RB]N,B)7Tr+Rw(L2:i(V+N+VS5i2Obu0I');

define('LOGGED_IN_SALT',   'n|yRYtIi#y5Q|-3|Y~-y]f0t|1n,aE7M@ubchoibda?RDdeCwRC|~e)-d?u*JJMc');

define('NONCE_SALT',       'w|1+voiV-[q5,F3,M@wOLvOJJz*>&3Ui9drlQ{Q>Ls2|#lZVzA46?&+6&Vrgg1x');

The Not-So Obvious

5. Database setup - user, password, and database

Make sure you create a database for each blog, if one is compromised you do not want it affecting any other sites you may have on your server.

Make sure you create a username for each of the installs, do not share them between wordpress installs and DO NOT USE ROOT!

The user should be a limiuted userm grant it SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE privileges.
mysql> GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE ON wordpress.* TO 'wordpress'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'newpassword';
mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Make sure that your user only has local access to your database, so that it can not access your database remotely.

6. Do not use default wp_ table prefixes

Don't use the default wp_ prefix to table names. This method is useful but should not be relied upon for a security fix, one a hacker has got as far as being able to conduct SQL injections or other hack then this method will not prevent them getting further for very long, but it will keep them guessing. Do not use the default wp_ prefix instead use a random one.

This is rather more difficult if you are trying to secure a site that has already been setup, but you can use the WP Security Plugin to do this

7. SSL for wp-admin

SSL connections are far more secure than normal http connections so, force SSL for admin add the line define('FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true); to your wp-config.php file Options All -Indexes to your .htaccess file

8. Allow access to your wp-admin from one IP Address

Although this method worries me, due to loosing access to my files I have implemented it to see how it goes. If you have a static IP address you can Secure the wp-admin files from being edited. By default all but the wp-config.php file can be edited via the wordpress admin area.

If you add a .htaccess file to your wp-admin folder and add the following:

Order Deny,Allow
Allow from xx.xx.xx.xx
Deny from all

This will then only allow you to edit those files from the IP address specified

You can use other options in the IP address such as:

A (partial) domain-name - Example: Allow from apache.org
A full IP address - Example: Allow from 10.1.2.3
A partial IP address - Example: Allow from 10.1
A network/netmask pair - Example: Allow from 10.1.0.0/255.255.0.0
A network/nnn CIDR specification - Example: Allow from 10.1.0.0/16

9. Deny access to the wp-config.php file

Perhaps a safer method than the above would be to specifically deny access to your wp-config.php file, thus keeping your database username and password more secure.

Add the following line to you r.htaccess file in the root of your site

<FilesMatch ^wp-config.php$>deny from all</FilesMatch>

10. Move wp-config.php file to a directory below the one it is currently in

for example if your is the is setup as such:

/var/www/domain.com/htdocs/Site files here

you can move the wp-config.php file to below the htdocs folder i.e.

/var/www/domain.com/

WordPress will handle this change automatically and allow you to have the wp-config.php file below the web root which is a great deal more secure.

11. Add Apache Level security to wp-admin

AuthType Basic
AuthName "Domain.com WordPress Admin"
AuthUserFile /var/www/domain.com/.auth/.htpasswd
Require user domainAdmin

htpasswd -cm /var/www/domain.com/.auth/.htpasswd domainAdmin

12. Blacklist ip addresses

Edit the .htaccess file in the root of your site and add the following:

<Limit GET POST PUT>
order allow,deny
allow from all
deny from 123.456.789
deny from 93.121.788
deny from 223.956.789
deny from 128.456.780
</LIMIT>

Add the ip address of the visitor you want to ban, you can add multiple deny from xxx lines to ban multiple addresses.

This may not be as useful unless you are actively monitoring your logs, but it can be useful if you get a great deal of SPAM comments from one user.

You can also use the Lockdown plugin to record all failed attempts to access your wordpress admin. You can then add the IP address to the ban list.

13. Stop WordPress serving anything other than images from the wp-content/uploads folder

You can secure the wp-content/uploads directory to stop it serving anything other than images

Order Allow,Deny
Deny from all
<filesMatch  "\.(jpeg|jpg|gif|png|js|css)$">
Allow from all
</filesMatch>

Remember if you want to include other file types in your WordPress posts you will have to add them to the list for example a pdf document, you would add pdf to the 'files' line.

14. Stop SQL injection attacks

Although WordPress should already do this for your you can ensure that you stop SQL injection attacks. SQL injection attacks are where malicious users use forms on your site to add code to database records.

Add the following to the .htaccess file in the root of your website.

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING (\<|%3C).*script.*(\>|%3E) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING GLOBALS(=|\[|\%[0-9A-Z]{0,2) [OR]
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING _REQUEST(=|\[|\%[0-9A-Z]{0,2)
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php [F,L]

15. Remove your WordPress version

Sounds crazy but you should really do this. If hackers find a vulnerability in a particular build of WordPress then they will use search engines to find sites using that version and then exploit that vulnerability.

edit functions.php file of your theme and add the following line to it remove_action('wp_head', 'wp_generator');

16. Stop search engines indexing any of your WP- folders

add the following to your robots.txt file:

Disallow: /wp-*

This in combination with not allowing browsing of these folders will stop those files from being accessed.

17. Lockdown Plugin to stop brute force attacks

Using the Lockdown plugin to ban addresses after a certain number of failed login attempts will help prevent brute force attacks.

18. Use WordPress Firewall plugin

I have blogged before about the default set of plugins that I install, this is one of them, make sure you get it installed as it protects you against some of these holes especially SQL injection attacks.

19 File permissions

Here is a quick run down of some file permissions to check for your wordpress install are as follows:

../ 0755
../wp-includes 0755
../.htaccess 0644
index.php 0644
js/ 0755
../wp-content/themes 0755
../wp-content/plugins 0755
../wp-admin 0755
../wp-content 0755

On linux command line run 'chmod 0755 wp-includes -R' for example, or you can use your ftp client.

All my servers have ftp disabled as this is another potential security hole.

20. Backup, Backup, Backup

Ok this is not strictly a security fix, but it the worse happens it will help you to recover. Make sure you back everything up, WordPress install, uploaded files and critically the database. I use BackWPup which can up your data to Amazon S3. Very cheap method of keeping secure backups of your blog., or to FTP.

It is worth pointing out that if your site is hacked make sure you check all the files in the backup you are using before you restore. If a backup has run after the hack then any malicious files may be present in the backup.

If you are in this situation use the backup for your database and for any uploaded files and get a fresh copy of WordPress and any plugins.

Note:

Even with all these methods you may still be vulnerable, holes in your web server security, holes in plugins that you use or any number of factors could allow you to be compromised, but with these methods you are gaining more of the upper hand in the battle against hackers.

As a WordPress plugin developer I am looking into the possibility of creating a plugin that does some if not all of these methods for you or at least checks them and gives you advice as to how to improve the security. During this research I have found many plugins out there that claim to do this, some work better than others, indeed some do not work at all, but none are comprehensive and as such I think I will attempt to code one up that will do or check this list of 20 tips.

Related posts:

<a

I have been looking at the visitor stats. I seem to be ranking for a very wide and varied number of search terms, I guess that is to be expected du to the wide and varied nature of this blog.

I have feared that this breadth of content may work against me in the success of this blog, but it seems not. On my sister blog, which unfortunately I have neglected of late in preference to this one on which I write about affiliate marketing, I always talk about how important unique content is. This very blog demonstrates that very well. If I can go through some statistics to demonstrate what I mean.

August 2009 saw only a handful of visitors. We are talking about 10′s rather than 100′s or 1000′s. Since August 2009 I have been blogging regularly and have written a great deal of content on a wide variety of subjects from DIY to technology and affiliate marketing.

The last year has seen the number of unique visitors to this blog rocket and in August 2010 I had over 2000 unique visitors and as I said they come to the site from a range of keyword terms.

I am ranking on the first page of Google for a number of those terms, some in the top two or three results. This is a very pleasing improvement. I hope that by this time next year I will have built on that success and developed the site and visitor base even more.

Related posts:

<a

Well for various reasons, generally I will write a whole bunch of posts in one go and then schedule them to be published over the coming days to ensure that there is a constant feed of content to the live site, rather than a big chunk and then nothing for weeks followed by a big chunk again.

Having a constant stream of regularly posted content is better for Search Engines (SEO) especially for Google. There is a chance that Google would see a mass of published content as being SPAM rather than being genuine content if it did not fit within the pattern of posting for that site.

Related posts:

<a

I am please to say that I have had very few problems.

I thought that I would give my first view of WordPress 3.0.

What is different in this version?

Custom Post Types

New Default Theme

Custom Background Support

Specific Templates for Authors

New Users Tutorial

Custom Woo Navigation added to the core

Merge of WordPress and the now defunct WordPress MU

Security Improvements with automatic creation of Security Keys

There are many other improvements, but these are mainly within the code and in the technical development of the software rather than up-front features.

The Install

WordPress can now be installed as a multi-site system very much like WordPress MU used to. I have yet to try this but will be investigating those features very soon as I use WordPress for many sites and it would be perfect if I can simply have one install to run them all rather than having to go through the process time and time again.

The normal WordPress install is very similar to the WordPress 2.x installs where it creates the configuration file, asking you for the username and password for the database and the database name. The main difference that I found was that it no-longer gives you a randomly generated admin password, but asks you to enter your password.

I think this is much better as it cuts out one step in the WordPress setup process, you no-longer have to go into the admin area and change the password to something sensible that you can remember. It does of course have the password strength indicator to ensure that you are not using a password of 1234!

The install still asks you for a name for your blog, but frustratingly does not ask you to change the Tag line. If this were added to the install process it would streamline the install even more. In my view if it added permalink settings as well this would be perfect and would mean that it is ready to go after the install rather than having to modify settings. I suppose the problem with this is that it would make the install process more cluttered but I would rather have that and know that once the install was finished WordPress was configured how I wanted it rather than having to go through the settings.

The WordPress install now checks the version of MySQL and PHP on the server. I always thought that this was something that it would do and it never occurred to me that it would not so this is very good news and long overdue. It is something that I have had in my plugins for some time now, checking to make sure that the server supports their requirements. This seems a basic thing that should have been introduced from the beginning of WordPress.

The WordPress Admin Interface

At first glance the WordPress admin interface looks very much the same. The theme has been updated a little, indeed the admin area is supposed to be easier to theme.

Updates: A large number of the changes included are the ability to do bulk updates, both WordPress plugins and themes now have the ability to have bulk updates, and the updates for WordPress its self have now moved onto the Dashboard.

Interestingly during the time it has taken since I installed WordPress 3.0 (2 hours ago) there has been an update, so I have gone through the update process to update WordPress to the latest nightly build and the process is exactly the same as the 2.9x automatically upgrade feature.

Custom Posts and Taxonomies: The introduction and improvement of custom posts and custom taxonomies will add much more functionality to WordPress and a huge amount of scope for building more advanced applications based on the WordPress Framework. I have not fully got my head round what is possible with these, but I intend to in the near future and I will try and post mu findings here.

Search Engines blocked Message: A very small but useful thing that I have noticed, as the install of WordPress 3.0 I have done is just a test install I noticed the box on the install which says allow search engines to see my blog, I now have a message in the top bar of the admin interface “Search Engines Blocked” a useful reminder, especially for me as I use many test installs of WordPress and am paranoid about domains or IP addresses being blocked for spamming when I am testing new scripts on those WordPress installs.

Revision interface: The interface that allows you to compare the revisions of a post within WordPress has been updated, the fact of the matter is that I did not know that this interface even existed, and when I compare the 2.9.2 and the WordPress 3.0 interfaces I can not see any difference, but this is defiantly a feature I will be using in the future.

Menu Management: WordPress 3.0 now has the Woo Navigation features integrated as core. This allows you to manage the menus on your WordPress via a drag and drop interface. It also means that you can make up custom menus that include both pages and categories, a very useful feature especially if you are using WordPress as a framework for a CMS or e-commerce site.

There are many other features and the list of new features for developers is apparently endless. I must get time to read the whole list and see what it means for WordPress developers and how I can use them to improve my WordPress Plugins.

Will I be upgrading?

Simple answer is yes, of course I will upgrade, the more detailed answer would be that I will upgrade my WordPress installs that have a blog on them such as this one, Earning From Affiliates and On the Allotment first. I will then start to move onto the other sites that use WordPress as a framework for e-commerce or affiliate sites. However, I want to investigate the multi site facilities before I do that to see if it is an easy task to move over to a single install of WordPress to manage all my sites.

Whats next?

You will have noted several times in this post that I have seen areas that I need to gen up on. Custom Posts and Custom Taxonomies specifically look like an area that will be of use to me in my WordPress Datafeed Import and WordPress Amazon Import Plugins. I have a load of work to do playing with these new features to discover what I can do, look out in the near future for exciting new features for my plugins.

Related posts:

<a
