I will start by saying that I will not be revealing any of the sites that I have used the  Build My Page Rank service on. I have not used it on any of my main sites (this or my company site), but I have used it on a variety of different Affiliate sites and blogs. I have tried to use it on a variety of sites, both new and old, content sites, datafeed driven sites and sites both with and without any page rank so that I can really see its effect.

What is Build My Page Rank and how does it work?

 Build My Page Rank is a service that effectively allows you to guest blog on any of their 1500 blogs that are page rank 0 to page rank 6. They allow you to add one do-follow link for every 150 words that you write. When you setup your site on their system, they ask you to select the category that best suits your site, Food, Technology etc. and then the posts that you write are placed randomly on one of the sites that  Build My Page Rank operate that match the category you have chosen for your site, giving those links greater authority than if they were on unrelated random sites.

Are the links detectable?

One great concern that I had was that the links created were not detectable as being paid links. We all know Google’s (and others) view of paid links and as such if the links created can be tied back to  Build My Page Rank then those links would be worthless to me.

I have monitored over 1000 links build using the  Build My Page Rank System, they are on a variety of different sites and I can see no way that those blogs could be tied back to  Build My Page Rank, the links are normal links, the blogs are straight forward blogs you would see anywhere else on the web and the domains are owned by a variety of different people.

I did a great deal of research before I signed up for their service and I never found anyone that claimed that the links could be tied back to a paid link building service. It is also my opinion after analysing the links I have create with the service that they are indeed undetectable.

How do you use Build my Page Rank?

Simple, just add your site and write content, including a link on yor chosen keyword or phrase. They provide tools to monitor the anchor text you are using so that you can both build around one phrase and vary your link building.

How Much Does it Cost?

Build my Page rank offer a 10 link free trial, which is well worth signing up for, just to try the service with no obligation to carry it on.

The cost of the actual service depends on how many sites or projects you want to work on at the same time:

Up to 5 domains – $59/month
Up to 10 domains – $79/month
Up to 20 domains – $99/month
Up to 50 domains – $159/month
Up to 100 domains – $275/month
Up to 150 domains – $360/month
Up to 200 domains – $400/month

Paid Writing Service

 Build My Page Rank also offer a paid writing service, for $2.50 you can have someone write your 150 word articles and include one of your links, you can elect to approve all articles before they are published, but this effectively means that you can get links for just $2.50, a bargain in anyone’s book!

My Opinion – Does Build my Page Rank Work?

Yes!

All the sites I have used the service on have improved in their page rank, many are now ranking in the top results on page 1 for searches on their keywords. The page rank of 75% of the sites I have used it on has improved by at least one point, many have increased by 2, and some by 3.

A great result in just 3 months of work.

I would recommend anyone who is wanting to build links for a web project to use  Build My Page Rank.

The honest truth is I have become a little disillusioned since the Google Panda update which seems to have had an impact on this site. My page rank was reduced by one and the result has been a halving in the visitor numbers, however that being said, this site still gets a good readership so I should continue with keeping it up.

I have considered why the site has taken a hit from Panda, all content on the site is totally unique, but one thing it does do which has been a concern of mine for a while with regards to ranking is that it covers a diverse range of topics, it looks at my Internet and software work and affiliate marketing which all fit into a little niche, but then it also looks at DIY, tools, gardening, cooking and family life.

I am not going to change that, this is my blog, about my life and if Google does not like that the raspberries to them!

So what have I been up to in the mast month?

Datafeed Import Plugin 3.1

As you will know I recently released a major update to my Datafeed Import Plugin for WordPress, version 3.0 has been a great success, as with all of these things there have been a  few niggles that I have been working on. I am about to release version 3.01 of the datafeed plugin for WordPress with some minor bug fixes.

I have also been having problems with SPAM on my Digitalquill Support system, literally hundreds of thousands of SPAM messages, and nearly 20k in one day, this has effectively killed the support system I used and made it impossible for me to find genuine tickets.

I am in the process of doing two things to combat this, I am trying to put a CAPACHA into the new ticket form on the ticket system, however, this is third part software which thus far has not liked what i have done to it so back to the drawing board.

I am also working on creating a user forum for all the software I have developed, I did have a forum in the past, but this was one where I allowed users to register and participate, this soon suffered the same fate as the support system and was overwhelmed by SPAM.

With this new forum I intend to make it user only, using the username and password provided to users when they buy the software, the same username and password they use to download the software. In this way I will disable all user registration and as such it will be a private forum where only users can post, that is unless spammers find a hole in the phpBB software and exploit it.

Category Master Plugin

I have just released a new plugin, which I will post more about here in the next few hours. The Category Master plugin allows you to automate the categorisation of your WordPress blog.

As with my other software, this has been built out of a requirement in my own business, it complements the Datafeed and Amazon import plugins as it allows you to automatically create your own categories rather then using the ones provided in the datafeed.

As I say I will post here about the launch of this new plugin and give you more details about what it is and what it does.

Family life

Family life has been busy, I am still finishing off the Orangery, we have had some delays due to electrics, but now the floor is down, skirting boards are on and about the only thing left to do is paint. We have even been looking at wallpaper and decoration for the dining room which connects to the Orangery so we must be nearly there!

Eva has not been at school over the summer so there has been some entertaining to do there, we went to a great place in North Lincolnshire last week called Elsham Hall, it was fairly quiet as it was the last day they were open before the winter, but Eva loved feeding the fish in the lakes and rolling down the hills. She has a real affinity with animals and stood for ages stroking the sheep and goats.

We will be on holiday soon, just a short 5 day break to North Yorkshire Moors, but it should be good.

It seems there is a bug in Blogger.com with IE9 meaning that you can not click the publish button. I wonder if anyone else has found this? Is this another example of poor quality developers who simply discount Internet Explorer because ‘it doesn’t fit to the standards. Poor show Google.

The idea behind this is that you, as a person change from day-to-day, your emotions, state of mind, stress level, perspective and many external influences on you change. As such, if you want to write higher quality posts, work as you do now, construct and write your post, proof read and edit it until you have something that you would publish, but before hitting that publish button, wait for 24 hours, then re-read your work, make any amendments you see fit, and then publish.

I will be trying this technique out on as many of my blog posts as I can. This will mainly be on other blogging projects that I am just starting, as these are more focused niche blogs rather than this general one, but I will also use it here. I hope that by giving each post a 24 hour breathing space I will be able to improve the quality of the output.

It will not always be relevant, especially if a blog post is related to a current event, or product offer, but there are many posts that I have published that I wish I had just waited and re-read with fresh eyes. Of course we all hope access to that edit button, but, it would be better to get it right first time round.

We all talk about how to promote our sites overall, we talk about the bigger picture, but perhaps the old frugal saying of ‘look after the pennies and the pounds will look after them selves’ is also true with blogging and indeed general website promotion.

If we look after the promotion of each individual post as we publish it, then the cumulative effect of our promotion work over time will be far greater than we could hope to achieve simply trying to promote the site as a whole.

Do not get me wrong, there are things we should not forget about the bigger picture, promotion of your site via banner adverts, affiliate schemes and other methods should not be forgotten, but, the bit-by-bit approach may be more achievable.

So you have written a great article, and clicked that publish button, what now? I have a personal checklist, printed out stuck on the wall by my desk of things that I do after I publish every post.

I thought that I would share that with you.

1. Internal Linking Are there any existing posts you should link to this?
2. Cross post to other blogs if relevant
3. Cross post to Blogger – intro to post
4. Post to Twitter (websites own profile)
5. Re-Tweet to other relevant twitter accounts
6. Post to Face book
7. Digg your post
8. Post to Delicious
9. Post to StumbleUpon
10. Post to Reddit as a book mark
11. Post to FriendFeed
12. Post to Linkedin Groups:
    Specify Relevant groups for your site

    #3
    #5

13. Search for other blogs on the same topic and comment if relevant
14. Use IMautomator.com to bookmark your site – Questionable as to if this is worthwhile

This process takes me about 5-10 minutes depending on how many Linkedin groups are relevant, but I tend to only do 2 or three as more would seem a little spammy.

As you can see, some of these tasks I have automated using WordPress Plugins. When I get some time I intend to research or develop some a single plugin that can do more of this automatically.

This way you are building your back links and increasing the chances of your site being well indexed by Google and other search engines and over time you are building up a body of back links that will remain relevant and live back to your site. Even if they do not improve your page rank directly, this social promotion will also gain you organic traffic from people who find those posts from different angles.

I have one of these check lists for each of my blogs and have a modified one for my affiliate sites so when I create or review another product on those sites I will also go through a similar list.

The first thing I would like to say is that I follow ProBlogger and all he does, I really like the way Darren Rowse presents himself, he certainly has a great deal to boast about, he has achieved a great deal, but he talks about it with grace an humility unlike other uber bloggers or affiliate marketers who seem to be all about how good they are rather than giving something back to the community.

I can tell you that the books Authors Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett have not written this book following some simple research into the subject, they are writing from a great deal of experience and they both use that experience to provide examples throughout the book to illustrate the important points they are making.

When I bought the second edition of the book, I am sure that I bought it for nearer to its £16.99 cover price, I was shocked to see that it is now selling at £9.06 on Amazon. In my opinion a deal that if you are a blogger or online marketer should not pass up, and I will tell you why.

This book can not magically get you a six-figure income, and the authors are at pains to say thins throughout, but if you follow the hints and tips in the book and you put in the hard work and dedication that the authors talk about, then you will be in with a good chance of creating a decent blog and getting a half decent income from it in the long run.

I know why the authors decided on the title for this book, it does grab your attention, but it does perhaps suggest that this is a ‘get rich quick’ scheme, which it is not, it is so much more than that, and by no mean a con.

The book gives you the reality, and points out that blogging is not easy money, the authors keep referring back to effort leading to rewards which is something that I always believe is true in any walk of life or business stream, put in the effort and you will get the rewards.

The Secrets of blogging book is presented and written in an easy to read format, in an almost conversational style of writing. You will probably not read the book cover to cover, as it is not that type of subject matter, but this book gives you help throughout the whole life cycle of your blog, from starting it to earning from it and eventually selling it if that is your end-game.

The ProBlogger book will always be on your desk and you will keep referring to it as you build your blog, dipping into the chapters that you feel will help you. I have had one or other of the editions of this book on my desk for the last 2 years, and even brought it away on holiday with me, much to the disgust of my wife!

The gem of this book is that the authors challenge the reader to take action, to do something useful and worthwhile, ‘be remarkable in everything you do’ say the authors, which is very profound, but does challenge you critically review how you operate and make the changes necessary to improve what you do.

I found the chapters on Buying and Selling blogs particularly interesting and useful as I am currently trying to sell several blogs and am in the market for buying an established blog.

Before buying both copies of this book, i of course read other reviews that were out there on the Internet, the only bad thing I could find at the time was that there was no Digital format copy of the book, I am pleased to tell you that this is no longer the case with a Kindle format available for sale on Amazon.

I would thoroughly recommend Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income for anyone who is either starting a blog, has been blogging for some time and wants to move their blog forward and indeed anyone involved in affiliate or other online marketing as the principles in the book lend themselves well to those fields as well.

This kind of set me aback, and set me thinking as I have always judged the success of blogs and sites in general by their content and their traffic stats. However I do see the writers point here, getting hung up on content and traffic stats can sometimes get in the way of the real judge of success and that is that of what your readers or customers actually think of your site.

This is often not an easy thing to quantify. I know for a fact looking at search terms that a large number of people come to this site looking for specific DIY details relating to roofing materials and our orangery project, however, do those visitors find what they read useful? That is a question that is very hard to answer, I hope that they do.

On some of my posts on this site, I have reviewed tools, these reviews have (yes I admit it, shock horror!)  affiliate links to recommended suppliers for those tools. Once could suggest that a good judge of what my readers think of the content is if they click on that affiliate link and buy that product, but it really is not as simple as that, they may find the information useful and as such the post as done a good job in that regard, but they may have missed the affiliate link for some reason, or simply decided to buy elsewhere, it maybe that those posts are good, useful reviews but poor at pushing the visitors through to the affiliate sites.

I know that these reviews must be useful as I have reffered many buyers to the affiliate sites, but again the reverse argument to the above is valid, did my review give them the information that they needed or was it just the piece that swung the balence after reading otehr reviews.

I think that I will stick to my ethos that good content is king, if you provide useful, unique information that people will want to read and will benefit from reading, then surely you will not go far wrong.

As for measuring the success of a blog or website, I am unsure. Repeat visitors is clearly a good method, people coming back must see something that they find useful. I will keep thinking about this as I look at the stats for this site falling due to lack of blogging. So no, I think that visitors are a good judge of success and good content leads to visitors so I will stick by my fundamentals that content is king.

We all experience it at some time or another. I have lost count of the number of times I have sat thinking ‘I must write something’ and nothing comes, I can not think of anything to post.

I have just had a conversation with Becky who is writing on her blog ‘How to Trust‘ I was asking how it was going, and she said, she can’t think of anythign to write. A typical case of bloggers block.

I myself have had a period of bloggers block with this blog. I went two weeks without a post, we all make excuses like we are too busy, but at the end of the day it is bloggers block.

The question is how do we beat this? I believe that it is the single most important aspect of blogging, if you can come up with a good method of keeping content coming and beating bloggers block then you are onto a winner.

I thought that I would do some research and come up with some ideas on how to trigger inspiration for new posts while you are in that dreaded bloggers block period.

There are many posts giving ideas on how to do this, but I think that by far the best is Darren Rowse posts which he gives 20 tips on beating bloggers block.  Review something in your niche

Some of the ideas are, to search and find out what other bloggers in your niche are writing about, this will give you ideas or you can even write your own opinion on what they are discussing. Give your own view point or slant on those subjects.

On that subject writing your opinion is always a good way of beating the block, and if all else fails have a rant! Try and make it humerous peolpe love to read someone having a good rant about something.

The biggest tip that I can give is every time you have an idea of a post log into your wordpress and write some notes, if you do not have time to write the full post just write the title and a couple of notes, save it as a wordpress draft these are pure Gold when you are struggling with Bloggers Block.

I have been very lucky in the last 6 months as I have had a large project to blog about, I am sure that bloggers block will return for me when this project has ended!

It only has a very simple interface. You can’t modify permalinks and you don’t have access to the all in one seo plugin fields but I guess that you can’t have everything!

The app does have the ability to upload images directly from your mobile, which is good but you can’t control where those images show in the blog post or put alt and name tags onto the image.

Having said all that it is great for short quick posts.

Having said all that this months figures are down by 8% on the previous month so perhaps the growth is coming to an end, although this down turn in visitor numbers is directly linked to a period where I have been too busy to blog. Which shows me yet again and proves the point I always make, success is directly proportional to the effort you put in.

The question is what have I been doing differently this year to last, well the main thing that I can put it down to is consistent blogging. Blogging good unique content about projects that people are interested in. Simple as that.

In the next 8 months of 2011 I would like to focus on getting a 10% month on month increase in traffic numbers. In the first three months of the year I was getting rather month than that in terms of an increase so I think it is very much possible.

The blog still covers a multitude of subjects from tec, programming and WordPress to DIY and family life.

I have blogged before about the increase in the number of words I have written, I would be interested to calculate a month on month word count so that I can see if it is proportional the the increase in traffic. Perhaps there is a WordPress plugin there that I could develop…!

I have also seen that the blog is earning more money, so the increase in content, leads to an increase in traffic which in turn leads to an increase in income.

The blog has also improved its page rank, and although a Google page rank of 2 is fairly modest, I am happy with that and can continue to work on improving this over the next 6 months.

The main reason for the acceleration in the rate of blogging is the Orangery project that we are working on, and of course I have been posting regular updates on the progress. I will be writing another on of those this evening if energy and time prevail.

I hope that these words are informative and useful to some people. I have noticed that there has yet again been an increase in the visitor numbers to the site, so on all factors it does seem to be gaining in its success.

Onwards and upwards to the 70,000. I think that 100,000 words is the next real target.

Becky Pursey is writing a blog ‘How to Trust‘ initially dedicated to writing about trust in relationships, but I know she has bigger plans for her blog eventually. Becky is very new to the blogging world but is making a promising start.

This means that in a month and a half I have written 10,000 words. Good progress and I hope that there is not too much waffle.

Blar, Blar, Blar Blar Blar!!!

I hope that it is useful. I try and keep both friends and family updated on life and use this blog to post about projects, tech and DIY which will hopefully help others.

The visitor numbers are also up a little this month (0.87%) despite the site being down due to the server issues I had. I am also please to see that I come on the first page of Googles SERPs for the term ‘kitchen orangery extension’

I must get my twitter and facebook updater plugins working again, I used to use Ping.fm but they do not appear to be working at the moment so I will need to find another solution.

While looking for this I happened to have a look at the people that are following me and to my surprise Darren Rowse from Problogger is following me. Ok e’s also following nearly 50,000 others but hey! still chuffed about that!

I have feared that this breadth of content may work against me in the success of this blog, but it seems not. On my sister blog, which unfortunately I have neglected of late in preference to this one on which I write about affiliate marketing, I always talk about how important unique content is. This very blog demonstrates that very well. If I can go through some statistics to demonstrate what I mean.

August 2009 saw only a handful of visitors. We are talking about 10′s rather than 100′s or 1000′s. Since August 2009 I have been blogging regularly and have written a great deal of content on a wide variety of subjects from DIY to technology and affiliate marketing.

The last year has seen the number of unique visitors to this blog rocket and in August 2010 I had over 2000 unique visitors and as I said they come to the site from a range of keyword terms.

I am ranking on the first page of Google for a number of those terms, some in the top two or three results. This is a very pleasing improvement. I hope that by this time next year I will have built on that success and developed the site and visitor base even more.

Images are also very useful for search engines, Google indexes images and a great deal of traffic can be obtained from images search traffic, and also alt tags and images names are all used by the Google index.

This and my other blog Earning From Affiliates was hacked and links to spyware added to the bottom of some of my sites, I assume this was some form of SQL injection attack on a vulnerability in WordPress.

As soon as I found this problem (hours after it happened) the site was cleaned, repaired and wordpress upgraded to fix the vulnerability, however by that time Google has showing a warning about the sites. No problem, all I should need to do is use the Google Webmaster tools to contact Google and ask them to re-check the site and remove the warnings. No… not that easy at all, emails and messages to Google went without a response. Weeks turned into months and I got fed up with the mess and was about to simply bin the sites when I thoughts I would have one more try and what do you know the warnings were removed and all is now back to normal running.
It has meant that the sites have been without updates for so long that their readers have probably long gone, any ranking in Google or other search engines has been damaged if not set back to zero so I am effectively starting afresh, although I do have the advantage that both sites still have their content, which is all self written unique content.

I have been busy over the last year, I was married in August to the wonderful and beautify Cheryl, her and our Daughter Eva are my life.

I have also been working on other projects, mainly software projects relating to Affiliate marketing, which have been much more successful that I could ever have hoped.

I will post more details about those projects in the coming days, but for now I just wanted to add a note to say I was back and I will be trying to find the time to post regularly and put some effort into these sites.

On The Allotment blog is a blog about all the activity on my new allotment plot. I have taken the tack of using it to record everything that happens on the plot.

To do this I intend it to be very visual, rather than having lots of words in the blogs, so this weekend I produced my first ever video blogs. I really went to town and produced three in one weekend. Go over to On The Allotment and have a look to see what you think.

I used YouTube and created a channel specifically for the blog. It was very simple to do, I have  Sony HD camera, and was able to upload the files directly from the camera to YouTube in HD format.

Ideally what I need to do is find some software that will allow me to edit those files. I was able to do some simply trimming and joining of the clips using the camera but I really want to do a better job with things like audio balance and putting intro clips and copyright notices onto the clips.

I wonder where other people blog from. I usually blog in my office at home, sometimes sat in front of the TV, but I don’t see why with today’s technology why one needs to be limited. I do have an Orange Mobile broadband dongle which I use quite often when I am out and about.

I was recently searching for domain names,  someone suggested ontheblog.com a play on words… unfortunately it i taken, although there is no site there.
