Things round here have been rather busy, although that should not stop me keeping up my blogging.

The honest truth is I have become a little disillusioned since the Google Panda update which seems to have had an impact on this site. My page rank was reduced by one and the result has been a halving in the visitor numbers, however that being said, this site still gets a good readership so I should continue with keeping it up.

I have considered why the site has taken a hit from Panda, all content on the site is totally unique, but one thing it does do which has been a concern of mine for a while with regards to ranking is that it covers a diverse range of topics, it looks at my Internet and software work and affiliate marketing which all fit into a little niche, but then it also looks at DIY, tools, gardening, cooking and family life.

I am not going to change that, this is my blog, about my life and if Google does not like that the raspberries to them!

So what have I been up to in the mast month?

Datafeed Import Plugin 3.1

As you will know I recently released a major update to my Datafeed Import Plugin for WordPress, version 3.0 has been a great success, as with all of these things there have been a few niggles that I have been working on. I am about to release version 3.01 of the datafeed plugin for WordPress with some minor bug fixes.

I have also been having problems with SPAM on my Digitalquill Support system, literally hundreds of thousands of SPAM messages, and nearly 20k in one day, this has effectively killed the support system I used and made it impossible for me to find genuine tickets.

I am in the process of doing two things to combat this, I am trying to put a CAPACHA into the new ticket form on the ticket system, however, this is third part software which thus far has not liked what i have done to it so back to the drawing board.

I am also working on creating a user forum for all the software I have developed, I did have a forum in the past, but this was one where I allowed users to register and participate, this soon suffered the same fate as the support system and was overwhelmed by SPAM.

With this new forum I intend to make it user only, using the username and password provided to users when they buy the software, the same username and password they use to download the software. In this way I will disable all user registration and as such it will be a private forum where only users can post, that is unless spammers find a hole in the phpBB software and exploit it.

Category Master Plugin

I have just released a new plugin, which I will post more about here in the next few hours. The Category Master plugin allows you to automate the categorisation of your WordPress blog.

As with my other software, this has been built out of a requirement in my own business, it complements the Datafeed and Amazon import plugins as it allows you to automatically create your own categories rather then using the ones provided in the datafeed.

As I say I will post here about the launch of this new plugin and give you more details about what it is and what it does.

Family life

Family life has been busy, I am still finishing off the Orangery, we have had some delays due to electrics, but now the floor is down, skirting boards are on and about the only thing left to do is paint. We have even been looking at wallpaper and decoration for the dining room which connects to the Orangery so we must be nearly there!

Eva has not been at school over the summer so there has been some entertaining to do there, we went to a great place in North Lincolnshire last week called Elsham Hall, it was fairly quiet as it was the last day they were open before the winter, but Eva loved feeding the fish in the lakes and rolling down the hills. She has a real affinity with animals and stood for ages stroking the sheep and goats.

We will be on holiday soon, just a short 5 day break to North Yorkshire Moors, but it should be good.

Related posts:

<a

You can spend an extra £30 and get a the <a

I would personally go with the three battery option, I have four batteries for my 18v Dewalt setup, and when you are doing a big job, it is good to have one in your drill, one fully charged and one charging,

Some basic info on the drill:

1hr Charger
2-Speed
Variable & Reverse
13mm Keyless Chuck
17 Torque Settings
Electric Brake
Replaceable Brushes
Fan Cooled Motor
Rubber-Coated Grip
All Metal Gearing

Max. drilling capacity in masonry 13mm, wood 38mm, steel 13mm. Max. torque 44Nm.
No load at speed 1: 0-500. No load at speed 2: 0-1700rpm. Overall length 225mm.
Weight 2.16kg.

I have not actually used this drill, but I did pick one up and had a look at it, it is typically well built as you would expect from Dewalt, it comes with a hard carry case. This machine will last you a good while, and when you compare its price with other drills on the market there is no comparison, a professional quality Dewalt drill or some own brand make you have never heard of.

Related posts:

Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner by DR.Bechmann, I bought it based on the Amazon reviews saying that it had worked, and indeed, I have just finished using it and it has also worked for us. A simple wash of the detergent tray and round the door seal and then pour the contents of the bottle into the detergent tray and run a 60 degree cycle.

Amazon says, you can’t see what it has cleaned, but it smells fresh and really cleaned it out well. We will be using this regularly now, it is only £4.79 so not going to break the bank and it keeps things clean.

Related posts:

<a

It has a new bathroom and is in a condition to move straight into.

The property is a very well presented End Terrace, Bay fronted house, it has three bedrooms, bathroom, through lounge/dining room, study/play room and kitchen.

There is either on street parking to the front or off street parking via the 10 foot, where there is room for a large double garage if the new owner wanted to erect one.

It has a sizable garden with a patio, lawn and veg plot.

We have no forward chain, and have priced the house very competitively with other houses for sale in the area. We are looking for offers in the region of £132,950 and are in a position to make a quick sale if required.

Belvedere Road is a very quiet, family friendly street. Unlike other similar roads in the area it is not a bus run and it is not used as a cut through from one end of hessle to the other so it is ideal for families.

The house is very close to amenities, the bus route follows the neighboring street, super markets and shops are within 5-10 minutes waling distance, the train station at Hessle is about a 20 minute walk if you need it.

We are expecting this to sell quite quickly so if you are interested contact Reeds Rains at Hessle on 01482 644622.

Related posts:

<a

Until now, I have attached external USB drives to the Media Centre PC in the front room, this solution was fine and has worked well, however, this does mean that the disks are all in the living room and as such a little messy and the shares are managed by the media centre PC its self, thus when the laptops access media the main media centre PC slows down.

We will be adding another Media centre to our network for the Orangery Kitchen Extension, and I have also installed a Satellite with picks up Freesat HD so I will be buying some Satellite receivers for the media centres and soon will be recording HD video, which will compound the problems.

I wanted to move all the storage into a single location, and as I have a ShevaPlug that runs the rest of the network (DHCP, Dansguardian, Squid Proxy and virus scanning) it made sense that this system running Ubuntu would also manage the network shares. A simple job of just plugging in a USB hum to the ShevaPlug, mounting the USB disks in Ubuntu and away we go…

Reality was not so simple, the main problems came around the NTFS file systems on the USB drives. Ubuntu does not support this natively (or my install does not) so I had to install ntfs-3g, no problems, and after a short while I got the disks mounted and up and running. I then started to try and play media from those disks and to copy some media back to them, every thing seemed very, very slow.

I was getting transfer rates of less than 2MB/sec, Okay this was over the network from the media centre to the Shevaplug Samba share, but the network I have setup is all running at 1Gb, all switches are 1Gb and all network deices (apart from wireless ones) are 1Gb, so this speed was very disappointing.

While investigating this, I was logged onto SSH on the Ubuntu Shevaplug. I noticed that SSH seemed to be running very sluggish, I had the bad feeling that the Shevaplug was not powerful enough to do what I wanted, but after doing a ‘top’ command to find out what the thing was actually doing, I found that ntfs-3g was running 90% of the processor and had taken all of the available memory.

A quick search on google revealed that NTFS-3g is notoriously poor and many people recommended keeping clear of it.

This presented a problem of what to do.

I had a spare disk so I set about trying different file system formats and the one I have ended up with is EXT4. I now have transfer speeds of 60MB/sec and more so I am well pleased with that.

Changing the file system obviously meant that I had to re-format the disks, so moving 2Tb of data from one place to another, finding space on different PCs for all the date while I cleared the first fist for formatting, then moving date from disk to disk to format each to EXT4.

I now have it all back up and running, all EXT4 disks, all my Samba shares setup and the media centre is currently re-indexing all the media, and everything looks good.

Related posts:

pro-blogger which was taking about measuring success of your blog. Throughout this article the guest writer Stephen Guise of Deep Existence maintained that neither traffic or content is a good measure of success.

This kind of set me aback, and set me thinking as I have always judged the success of blogs and sites in general by their content and their traffic stats. However I do see the writers point here, getting hung up on content and traffic stats can sometimes get in the way of the real judge of success and that is that of what your readers or customers actually think of your site.

This is often not an easy thing to quantify. I know for a fact looking at search terms that a large number of people come to this site looking for specific DIY details relating to roofing materials and our orangery project, however, do those visitors find what they read useful? That is a question that is very hard to answer, I hope that they do.

On some of my posts on this site, I have reviewed tools, these reviews have (yes I admit it, shock horror!) affiliate links to recommended suppliers for those tools. Once could suggest that a good judge of what my readers think of the content is if they click on that affiliate link and buy that product, but it really is not as simple as that, they may find the information useful and as such the post as done a good job in that regard, but they may have missed the affiliate link for some reason, or simply decided to buy elsewhere, it maybe that those posts are good, useful reviews but poor at pushing the visitors through to the affiliate sites.

I know that these reviews must be useful as I have reffered many buyers to the affiliate sites, but again the reverse argument to the above is valid, did my review give them the information that they needed or was it just the piece that swung the balence after reading otehr reviews.

I think that I will stick to my ethos that good content is king, if you provide useful, unique information that people will want to read and will benefit from reading, then surely you will not go far wrong.

As for measuring the success of a blog or website, I am unsure. Repeat visitors is clearly a good method, people coming back must see something that they find useful. I will keep thinking about this as I look at the stats for this site falling due to lack of blogging. So no, I think that visitors are a good judge of success and good content leads to visitors so I will stick by my fundamentals that content is king.

Related posts:

<a

As a landlord you may had additional costs which need to be covered, which would not be covered by standard buildings and contents insurance.

Standard buildings and contents insurance will also not cover your property if you are not resident.

It should also be noted that if you do not have the correct insurance, your insurance is effectively invalid and as such any mortgage on that property is not secure. A position that your mortgage company will not tolerate.

In the cold period we had I unfortunately had a little bit of a disaster at one of my properties. The property was unoccupied at the time, so I had left the heating on ticking over, however, either I had not left it on high enough or for some other reason the boiler went off.

This meant that with temperatures outside of -10°C outside, the house rapidly got very cold and all the pipes froze, the boiler burst, two pipes in the loft burst and the header tank froze solid breaking the ball valve.

I was called by the neighbor saying there was water coming through their ceiling and water pouring our of my house. I got there to find a scene of devastation, the whole house had water flowing through it, to ceilings were falling down, plaster was hanging off walls, carpets were ruined and the newly decorated house was ruined.

Insurance is critical and not only that the correct insurance is critical, you never know when you will need it, make sure that it is the right insurance for your situation, fortunately I was ok and insurance has covered the damage, plastering, new carpets throughout the whole house and a decoration top to bottom.

<a

They were actually asking in a round about way, if we had finished it yet!

The answer to that is no we have not finished it yet! I have unfortunately been busy on other projects, I am trying to get another property ready to go onto the market for sale so I have been fitting a kitchen here and doing some other tidying up to get it in tip-top condition.

We have also been on holiday and the end of March marked Evas third birthday so we had parties galore and I had a bedroom to decorate in princess pink as a surprise for her birthday. I will post about that then I get round to it and show some pictures of how it looks.

The long and short of it is once I get the other hose on the market I have the centre island to construct, some fiddles with electrics, skirting board and trims, cornice and plinths to go onto the units along with the handles, and then the floor to look at. Sounds fairly straight forward when I put it like that but there is still a little bit of work to do.

On the plus side it has been very nice over the last week or two with the lovely spring sun we have been having to have the bi-fold doors open, this is really why we built the orangery, I can be inside cooking tea while Eva and Mummy are playing outside. It really connects the house and garden in a way that the old doors or conservatory never could.

We have had several meals out in the garden, it has been really easy just to throw open the doors and move outside. As I say it is what we envisaged when we planned the extension and makes all the work worthwhile.

Related posts:

<a

It is a free service which is a website similar to an estate agents website in its structure that allows you to list your own home for sale, free of charge and free of commission.

I have been following the progress of Tepilo over the last 6 months or so and I have seen reports of some good private sales been made via the website, and although I have no experience of actually talking to any of these individuals or anyone who has used the site, this has given me the confidence to list one of our houses for sale on the site.

My view is that I can always either take it down or employ a traditional estate agent to sell the property if I get no interest, but we will monitor this over the next few weeks to see how it goes. As it is at the moment I still have some touching up to do on the property, I still have a couple of jobs to finish on the kitchen, but I have taken the risk of listing the property with this in mind.

The Tepilo Listing Process

The listing process on Tepilo is a very simple one, you answer some questions about your property, how many bedrooms, reception rooms. etc and upload an image. This is then your most basic listing created.

You can then enhance your listing by answering additional questions about the garden, property type, type of windows, central heating etc. You can upload more images to your listing for each room, and add more details text.

You can also create floor plans and virtual tours of your property so that people can walk through and see what your house is like online. I have yet to do these floor plans but will do when I get some time.

The Public Listing of your Property

The listing of your property looks great, Tepilo have integrated with Google Maps and Googles street view to show the location of your property and show an actual picture.

As I said before the layout is very much like a estate agents, with pictures of the property and the basic details, you can search for properties by region, price and distance from a postcode.

Our Listing on Tepilo

Ideas for enhancements to make Tepilo even better!

As a web developer/IT Project Manager myself, I always look at these sort of sites with a critical eye, with a view on ways I would have done to make it better. The truth is actually fairly little. There was one thing that I found a little frustrating and that needs fixing, which is I entered some content into the property details section, this text was formatted into Paragraphs, however when submitted it shows as one paragraph removing all the line breaks, a simple thing to fix. Perhaps even a visual editor would be good?

The other feature I would like to see is a view counter on your properties listing, this would show you against the listing in your account how many people have viewed your listing. This would give you an idea of how much impact your listing is having. It it could give you stats on how long each user spent on your listing similar to Google Analytics this would be even better.

Have a look at our listing on <a

The first at our home in our kitchen orangery extension, and the second in one of our other properties that we are getting ready for sale.

We were looking for a higher end ‘off the shelf’ kitchen for this property, clean, stylish and functional. We have gone for The Cottage Kitchen units from B&Q. I got a good sum off the price of the kitchen as Quill Developments has been approved for a B&Q trade account which will be a great help with future projects, unfortunate that it came after we did most of the work on the Orangery Extension as this could have saved us allot of money.

The B&Q kitchen cam flat pack so it all had to be setup, mostly impressed with the quality, although I was not impressed with the construction of the corner unit so I have modified it and added some strength and fixings to it to help. It is really designed to be supported by units either side of it, no problem in our situation as we have this, but I still thought it prudent to ad some strengthening to it.

The units (all 9 of them) went in, in what turned out to be a fairly short day, and then we have spent today fitting the work surfaces. I still have a little finishing off to do on the work surfaces and the handles and plinth to fit which will probably take another day or so.

I then have some tiling and painting to do and the floor to re-jig as the configuration of the units is now different and as such the floor (1 year old laminate). This will then bring the kitchen up to the standard of the rest of the house, it is newly decorated, has a new bathroom and new carpets throughout, it will make someone a very nice family home.

If you are looking for a property in the Hessle, Hull, East Yorkshire area please take a look at the house on <a

We had a group of family and friends round last weekend to help get the first coats of paint on the walls and ceiling, get the sockets cut out of the plasterboard and the back boxes fitted.

I spent about 4 hours drawing lines on the celling trying to mark out where we wanted the down lights. I keep changing my mind but finally settled on a pattern we are happy with, we go those cut out before the final coats of paint went on the ceiling.

The actual kitchen units went in relatively easily in just one day. Admittedly it was a long day, but a pleasing result. We still have two units to hang, the one above where the American fridge freezer is going and a 300mm wall unit next to the window, although we are unsure if there is enough space, the gap is 300mm at the bottom but only 295mm at the top. I am hoping that we can shave some out of the wall to get it in, if not I will build a wine rack up that side and use the 300 mm wall unit somewhere else or sell it on Ebay.

After fitting the wall units we realised that we had made a small mistake with the wiring for the under and over unit lights in that we have brought the power to the right hand side of the units, not thinking that we had a gap where the cooker and the cooker hood are so getting the power to the units on the left hand side would be a problem.

I spent a good 3 hours on Saturday afternoon threading wires through the wall, my Silverline Cable Access kit came in very handy, without them this would have been an impossible task, but happily I have managed to loop two lengths of 1.5 mm cable through the wall to the top and bottom of the units.

On Sunday I started fitting the Worktop, a task that I wanted to leave a full day for so that I could take things slowly, any mistake and it would mean great expense. Fortunately all has turned out ok, I did have a couple of scares where I had a chip out of the front corner, but the Elu router that I bough from ebay for £5 and a 50mm half inch straight bit did a great job, I rough cut with a panel saw to within 20mm of the required length, covered the work top in newspaper with lengths of masking tape over it to prevent scratches, and then measured and clamped a guide across the work top and cut the the final length with the router.

As you can see from the pictures the work top looks stunning. We have chosen a midnight high gloss. Hopefully it will stand up to day-to-day use and not scratch to easily.

I also fitted the window board, although it is slightly too short at one end of the window, I will find some quadrant uPVC and secure that to the window board to cover the join, which in the end will look quite nice.

Here are some pictures of the progress.
<a

Several people have asked for e to post a little bit about how we went about this. No I am not the expert on the plumbing side, but I can give you an over view of what we did.

You may or may not know the situation we are in, we have extended the back of the house and combined two rooms into one. In doing so we have demolished two previous extensions and made the whole thing into one. In terms of the under floor heating this meant that there were four sections to the floor, the original to the house, two parts from past extensions and one I fitted to the part we extended. This means that there were differing qualities of work. Really I should have scrapped the two floors from the previous extensions, but time and financial constraints meant that I had to make do.

The joists therefore did not match up in terms of their widths or where they run. This makes the planning of the underfloor heating rather difficult.

However, I am jumping ahead a little here, I started off by lifting all the old floor boards, some original and some chipboard. We then cleared out all the debris from under the floor, debris that had been left from the build, by electricians and plumbers cutting things out. The purpose for this was two fold, if you have ever crawled under a floor you will know kneeling or laying on a broken brick is not something you want to do too regularly! and in addition the clearer your underfloor the better your air flow will be, especially if like us you are going to insulate under your floor it is critical to maintain a good airflow.

As I have just said we were insulating under the floor. The ideal way to do this is by cutting solid insulation such as 100mm kingspan to fit between the joists, this is a very costly exercise and would have cost us in the region of £650 just on insulation alone.

I therefore came up with my own variation on a solution that has been used by others, that was to use rockwool style insulation held up by chicken wire. Fortunately B&Q were (and still are I believe) running an offer on rockwool insulation where you can get it for £3 per roll. Using this offer the insulation cost me just £25 (les actually as I bought too much!)

The idea is that you tack chicken wire in a trough form between the joists, making use that you use enough fencing clouts to hold the chicken wire securely. Also making sure that there is no chance that the bottom of the trough will be anywhere near the ground under the floor thus maintaining an air gap.

We then laid the rockwool into this trough, and then covered the top of that insulation with foil backed bubble insulation. The purpose of this was not so much to insulate, although it does have some insulation properties its self, it was more to utilize the foil to reflect heat from the underfloor heating pipes back up into the room rather than having it carry on down into the insulation.

We taped the foil insulation together with aluminum foil tape, which if truth be told was a right pain as the tape we used was the stuff you have to peel the back off. Once adhered to the foil it is great but it can be frustrating getting the backing peeled off. We also used this tape to tape the insulation to the joists making, ensuing that we left a 20mm gap between the insulation and the top of the joists.

We chose the John Guest 30Sq Meter Hot water insulation pack from Screwfix. Mainly because John Guest is a well known make who we trusted, our research showed that people who fitted it were happy and the pack contained everything we needed to complete the job.

When the kit came, we found that the clips that come with the pack are designed for solid insulation, you twist them into the kingspan. This would be a very quick and simple way of securing the underfloor heating pipes, however, in our scenario with the insulation we used, these were no good, so I bought some normal pipe clips an we secured these to the joists.

The main problem when laying the underfloor heating pipes is the planning. Deciding what pattern the pipes should take, on a single room system there are two loops, these should be as close to the same size as possible. You also want to try and get the first run of the pipe, i.e. the hottest pipes across doors or windows, or in the areas where you will mostly be walking.

Once you have planned the layout, you will need to cut notches out of the joists to allow you to loop across each joist, we designed the system in such a way that we kept the notches to a minimum, basically one at each end of the room.

Laying the pipe is a very frustrating task, the pipe has been coiled since manufacture and all it wants to do is go back to its loop, so it really is a two man job if you can, once holding the reel and un-doing its coil action and the other laying and clipping the pipe in the desired pattern.

Once you have the pipes laid, they have to go into the manifold, you should consult a plumber to connect this into your central heating system. They will also need to add a room stat, this allows you to run the underfloor heating independently of the central heading in the rest of the house.

We then laid chipboard flooring over the top of the insulation and pipes, we made sure that we measured and marked the underfloor heating pipes so that we did not screw through them!

We have a 35Sq meter room, with one wall totally glass and the main part of the ceiling glass, the underfloor heating system copes very well with heating the area up. We have easily had it up to 25°C and I am sure that it will go higher, but I melt at those sort of temperatures so we keep it down to 20°C

All in all we are very pleased with the result, hopefully the insulation under the floor and the insulation in the walls and roof space will compensate for the glass wall and large orangery window we have in the roof.

Related posts:

<a

At the beginning of the day we faced ripping out work that had already been completed in order that building control could view the structure of the ceiling. It turns out that Conservatec should have got the building inspector back to see their work before they handed the project back over to me.

However, as it turns out the number of photographs that I have taken of the project saved the day, the inspector could see the insulation that had been installed and the wall straps so he was happy. We do still need to sort out electrics Part P cert and we will be on our way.

It is funny really as Cheryl pointed out in her very nice valentines card and message to me this morning. At our wedding we had a nice reading, which at the time we thought suited our lives well, and as it turns out it is all the more relevant now than it has ever been, it went as follows:

You are holding up a ceiling
with both arms. It is very heavy,
but you must hold it up, or else
it will fall down on you. Your arms
are tired, terribly tired,
and, as the day goes on, it feels
as if either your arms or the ceiling
will soon collapse.

But then,
unexpectedly,
something wonderful happens:

Someone,
a man or a woman,
walks into the room
and holds their arms up
to the ceiling beside you.

So you finally get
to take down your arms.
You feel the relief of respite,
the blood flowing back
to your fingers and arms.
And when your partner’s arms tire,
you hold up your own
to relieve him again.

And it can go on like this
for many years
without the house falling.
That is the Partnership Of Marriage

A Marriage By Michael Blumenthal

We really have been holding up the ceiling today!

Wren delivered the units this morning and they are now stacked in the Orangery. Here are some pictures:
Dear Mr Houldsworth

Thank you for your email regarding your order.

I am disappointed to read of the problems you have had with the delivery of your order and I apologies for the inconvenience this has caused. I am keen to make sure this is not repeated. I assure you that we are working hard to improve our delivery service.

I understand you have now received your delivery and trust that everything is now in order.

Screwfix Direct recommends that customers do not schedule or commence any installation work until after you have received your order and checked all the goods for any defects or missing parts. This will enable you to resolve any technical questions or to order specific additional fittings as necessary.

Once again please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Screwfix have refunded the additional delivery charge but have not given any apology for the problems caused to my project. Their recommendation the one does not start any work until you get your order is simply not a practice one, indeed this is actually Screwfix’s USP (unique selling point) over other online services in that they advertise that fact that as long as your order is in before 6pm they will deliver next day.

As a result I have stopped using screwfix for the time being until I get a satisfactory response from them. I have had another big order required for this weekend, however, I have bought these goods from B&Q and as such Screwfix has missed out on £180 worth of order.

I will have several more orders of this size in the next few weeks as I work through to the completion of my Orangery Kitchen Extension project, these orders will be going to B&Q until such time as Screwfix give me an adequate response.

Related posts:

<a

We are having adjustable down lighters, some that we will angle downwards to the centre island and some that we will point up to illuminate the orangery roof it’s self.

The cutting out of these lights took far longer than it should have done. The time was taken carefully measuring where the lights wanted to be and marking up the wall. The position was critical as I needed to miss the structure of the roof. I had taken measurements of the spaces where I could get the lights into. It turns out that I needed a 75mm gap and on two sides of the roof I old had 75mm to play with, which dictated where the lights could go.

Once I had got that done, I have to admit that I did sit down and watch the 6 nations rugby, but I did so knowing that Saturday and Sunday would be very long days.

The remaining wall that needed boarding out was the outside wall of the Orangery, if you have seen some of the pictures you will have seen that the new walls of the extension part of the Orangery are about 65-70mm wider than the original walls. This is due to the 100mm cavity that they had to have for the building regulations. We made the decision that we should box out the original wall to the same level as the new wall. This would have the effect of merging the new and the old, and hopefully it would not be noticeable that we have had an extension at all. The outside of the building blends in very well, the bricks are almost an exact match, so we wanted the same for the inside. We did a similar thing across the other side of the Orangery with the other wall.

The only thing was how I was going to achieve this. I have been struggling with this decision for some time now. I have done a great deal of research and reading on the matter and int he end I have not come across any authoritative information on what I should do.

As we were boxing out the wall it made sense to use the space to do something constructive so we decided to invest the money into insulating the wall, it is the external wall and it does not have a cavity so any insulation we add to it will be of benefit. The question was how best to to this.

There are many ways to do this insulation that I have considered and researched. You can get Kingspan with plasterboard attached which you can then just dot-and-dab to the all. The problem with this in some peoples opinions is that you can not do this non-cavity walls. Kingspans website says nothing about where you can and can’t use this Kingspan k18, but I did come across a different kingspan option and that was to use kingspan k19 which is again solid insulation with plaster board attached, but this is designed to be screwed to battens rather than fixing by dot-and-dab.

If I was to have to go through the trouble of fixing battens to the wall, it opens up another option and the option I went with in the end and that is to batten out the wall and put solid insulation in between th battens and plasterboard over the top.

The arguments against this option is that the wooden battens do not hold the same insulation value as the solid insulation, and as such you loose μ value across the whole area of the wall because a significant area is taken up by the wooden battens, also there is an argument that the differential in the insulation properties can cause a differential in surface temperature across the wall, meaning that there is a potential condensation issue.

I have taken the view that there is no right or wrong here and I just needed to take the decision and go with it. What helped me in the decision was that the advantage of battening out the wall was that I could put in two horizontal noggins across the wall at the relevant heights where I will be securing the wall and base units. I would not like to hang the wall units on plasterboard plugs, so having something solid to fix the wall units to is a big bonus of this method.

We battened the wall with 75mm x 45mm battens, I needed to build up the 70mm gap and then add some to cover the dot and dab on the new wall, we then installed 50mm coeltex (kingspan alternative). This meant that we could leave a good air gap behind the insulation panels. We then boarded over the whole wall with plasterboard and then I got the tin work onto all the corners.

You will see from the pictures and the video clips that the plasterer has been for two days this week, he has got on well, there is still two walls to be done and the dining room, but that will be done next week.

Keep tuned for a special valentines present on Monday!
<a

A really good job, and fairly straight forward to do if not a little fiddly. The main process was one of planning what we wanted under the floors, in terms of electrics, media cables, water supplies and drainage from the central island.

You will see from the pictures that we got the second zone installed and then the flooring laid on top. I have roughly drawn where the pipes are as a visual reminder more than anything else. I can not think of any reason I will be drilling or screwing into the floor but you never know.

The system seems to be working very well, we have easily had it to a toasty temperature, even though we need to re-do some wiring for the boiler to enable us to use the under floor heating as a separate zone to the rest of the house.

We have also re-connected the old sink into where the new one will be in the centre island so that we have washing up facilities for the next couple of weeks until the Units come and I get chance to install the kitchen.

The next two weeks are critical on the project, everything is coming together and the critical path is getting rather tightly scheduled. I need to get the final wall insulated, I will post about how I am going to achieve this with Kingspan. The final bits of plaster boarding and dot and dab plaster boarding done, all the tin work on the corners of the plaster work.

I then need to schedule the Plasterer to come at the end of next week, so that we can give it a chance to dry before putting the base coats of emulsion and a couple of top coats on before the units arrive on the 17th Febuary. That will then mean that I can fit the kitchen the following weekend.

What I have failed to mention in that are those small jobs that take up more time than you think, cutting out the sockets in the plasterboard, cutting out the holes for the down lights in the Orangery roof, cutting out for the light switches, decisions on skirting board etc, etc.

Here are the pictures of the final result of the under floor heating and the fitted floor. I will post another post with the details of how we installed the underfloor heating, the process we went through and what we used to complete the job.
<a

This was a larger job than it could have been as we were replacing the floor and insulating under the floor well before we did the under floor heating.

It all went very well. We took up the old floor and cleared out the builders debris, two full trailer loads. This will help the airflow under the floor ensuring that we don’t get and issues with damp. While doing this I made sure that there was sufficient air flow, the area of the house we are extending have been converted from several extensions, each time an exterior wall has been left intact without any air bricks. I therefore chopped out bricks to allow the flow of air throughout the underfloor. This was critical as the insulation would take up some of the space under the floor so it is essential the the airflow is maintained lower down.

After the cleanup we made sure that all electrical cables and multimedia cables were laid where we needed them and then installed the new plumbing, hot and cold water feeds for the taps to the centre island, cold feeds to the dish washer, washing machine and American fridge freezer, and the waste water pipes from each.

Then we stapled chicken wire between the joists to support the insulation and filled them with rockwool style insulation, ensuing that the chicken wire had sufficient gap under it to maintain an air flow. We could have used kingspan or similar solid insulation, however, this would have cost in the region of £500 and totally outside our budget.

Once the rockwool insulation was down we taped foil backed bubble insulation over the top creating a 20mm air gap between the foil and the top of the joists, this is where the underfloor heating pipes would be laid. The foil will not only add to the insulation properties of the floor but it will also reflect the heat from the underfloor heating back up into the room.

We then laid the underfloor heating pipes on top of the insulation, clipping it to the joists at relevant intervals to hold it.

We have yet to re-lay the floor or finally connect the underfloor heating up to the manifold and into the central heating system, but that is a job for next weekend.

Here are some pictures of the progress and how we achieved the underfloor heating install:
<a

You are getting a professional make for DIY prices.

Ok you could buy a cheap make for half the price, but it will surely break within a short time and it will not have the power, torque or battery life that this machine will have so it is a false economy.

Some of the drills specification are as follows:

Weight (kg): 2.4
Hammer facility
Keyless Chuck
1 year Warranty
WEEE Requirements: Elec & Electronic Tools
Model No.: DC100KA-GB
No. of Drill Speeds: 2<br
